Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect at my first visit?
Your initial evaluation will be approximately 60 minutes with your physical therapist. Depending on your reason for seeking care, an orthopedic and/or pelvic floor exam may be recommended. You can expect to spend time discussing your history, concerns and goals, followed by a thorough examination. There will be time to explain findings, answer any questions, and discuss a plan for treatment. Home management or exercises are also recommended at your evaluation to start your treatment on day one.
What is pelvic floor PT?
Pelvic floor or pelvic health physical therapy is a type of physical therapy specializing in the functions of the pelvic region. This may include bladder, bowel or sexual function, as well as pain arising in the back, hips, abdomen or pelvis. Oftentimes, a pelvic floor examination involves an intravaginal examination, as the pelvic floor muscles lay deep within the pelvis, and can be best assessed with an internal exam. There are always alternatives to an internal examination that can be discussed with your provider, if preferred.
Do you accept my insurance?
ReclaimHER Physical Therapy, LLC is an out-of-network provider, and everything we do at your appointments are covered under out-of-network benefits. Payment is due at the time of service, and you will be provided with a superbill after each appointment that you may submit to your insurance for direct reimbursement. We highly recommend checking with your insurance company to understand your out-of-network benefits, and this is the responsibility of the patient.
Why is ReclaimHER Physical Therapy, LLC out-of-network and how does this differ from in-network services?
As an out-of-network provider, we are able to provide the highest quality, individualized care. We are able to make decisions together regarding your treatment plan, without restrictions from the in-network model, and without any surprise bills for denied visits. You will have one-on-one care with your Doctor of Physical Therapy for a full 60 minutes, without the use of aides, trainers or assistants. You will also have the ability to communicate with your provider between appointments as needed, and facilitate continued progress between visits. This model typically results in improved patient outcomes and decreased overall visits and visit frequency.
Do I need a referral for physical therapy?
In the state of Massachusetts, you have Direct Access to Physical Therapy, and therefore do not require a referral or prescription to attend visits and receive care. However, if you are relying on reimbursement, this is something your insurance company may require, and we recommend asking them this question specifically.
How can physical therapy help prepare me for birth?
Birth is a major physical event in a person’s life, and should be treated as such. We would, of course, train and prepare for a marathon, and birth should be no different! Seeing a pelvic floor therapist prior to birth can help with your mobility and alignment, breathing techniques, pushing strategies, pelvic floor health, recovery plan, as well as teach you strategies to help minimize tearing and diastasis recti. You can discuss your labor and delivery goals and develop an individualized plan with your therapist. Seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist prenatally can also help with your postpartum recovery and experience.
Why should I see a physical therapist postpartum?
Your 6-week follow-up visit with your OB or midwife will assess your healing from birth and ensure you are free of medical complications, but a pelvic floor physical therapist is specialized in evaluating the healing and function of your muscles and ligaments. We are movement and neuromuscular experts, who can assess the function of your pelvic floor and core for safe return to activity, exercise - and life! Many pelvic floor changes can be treated more readily during the early phase of your postpartum journey, and this may decrease limitations and symptoms later in life. It is standard care in other countries for all women to have a pelvic floor evaluation postpartum for general pelvic health and proper recovery.
Do you treat male pelvic floor conditions?
We are specialists in female anatomy, biomechanics and function, and unfortunately do not treat male conditions. We have a wonderful list of local resources where we can direct you for male pelvic floor concerns. Please feel free to contact us for recommendations.
